The underground expansion of the Patna Metro is gaining momentum as tunnel construction proceeds at a rapid pace across key segments of the city.
Patna’s dream of a modern transit system is steadily nearing reality as underground tunnel construction continues at a rapid pace across several important parts of the city. In a significant milestone, officials have successfully completed tunnel excavation between Moin-ul-Haq Stadium and Gandhi Maidan, marking another major step forward for the ambitious metro project.
⚡ Tunnel Construction Status — At a Glance
- Moin-ul-Haq to Gandhi Maidan: 100% Completed ✓
- Gandhi Maidan to Akashvani: Approx. 90% Completed
- Next TBM Shift: Towards Nehru Path (June 2026)
- Deepest Station: Rajendra Nagar (21 Meters Deep)
- Key Connectivity: Secretariat & Central Patna
According to senior officials from the Patna Metro Rail Corporation (PMRC), the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) deployed for this stretch will now be relocated toward Nehru Path. The next major phase of underground excavation is slated to commence from June 2026.
Preparatory works are already gaining momentum on the ground. Visible barricading has been erected near Income Tax Golambar, Vikas Bhawan, and the Patna Zoo stretch, while soil testing for the upcoming tunnel alignment is in its final stages.
New Underground Route to Improve Central Patna Connectivity
One of the most anticipated developments in this phase is the planned underground link between Akashvani Metro Station and Vidyut Bhawan. This corridor is designed to provide seamless connectivity to the city's Secretariat area and various government offices, which currently face significant traffic congestion.
| Location / Station | Type of Construction |
|---|---|
| Vidyut Bhawan | Underground |
| Vikas Bhawan | Underground |
| Patna Zoo | Underground |
| Raja Bazar | Underground |
| Rukanpura | Underground |
| Patliputra Metro Station | Underground |
| Danapur Metro Station | Elevated |
Beyond Patliputra station, the line will continue toward Danapur via RPS Mor and Saguna Mor, shifting to an elevated corridor structure.
Final Stages of Tunneling Between Gandhi Maidan and Akashvani
Authorities have confirmed that nearly 90% of the tunneling work between Gandhi Maidan and Akashvani has been completed. This section was considered one of the most engineering-heavy phases, as it passes beneath some of the city's oldest and most densely populated areas.
The underground alignment of this corridor includes the following stations:
- Rajendra Nagar
- Moin-ul-Haq Stadium
- Patna University
- PMCH
- Gandhi Maidan
- Akashvani
Rajendra Nagar to be the Deepest Station in the Network
Another unique feature of the project is the Rajendra Nagar Metro Station, which will serve as the deepest point in the entire network. Here, trains will operate at a depth of approximately 21 meters below the surface.
This extreme depth is necessary due to the existing railway tracks located above the site. The station is being designed to allow passengers to transition easily between the Rajendra Nagar Railway Terminal and the metro network.
Patna Junction as a Major Interchange Hub
Patna Junction Metro Station will play a central role in the future network, serving as a major interchange hub connecting both the Red Line and the Blue Line.
This means that commuters traveling from Danapur, Khemnichak, or the New ISBT will be able to switch lines effortlessly without relying on surface transport, further reducing travel time across the city.
Operational Target Set for Late 2026
PMRC officials are aiming to begin operations on the priority corridor between Patliputra Bus Terminal and Patna Junction by the end of 2026. With metro pillars, station structures, and tunnels becoming increasingly visible every month, the project is rapidly transforming the urban landscape of Bihar's capital.
